WHAT IS ELK VELVET?

Elk Velvet Antler (EVA) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries, dating back as early as the Han dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD). But its use expanded far past Asia. First century Roman army commander Plinius Secundus saw its potential benefit for epilepsy.

EVA has been reported to contain all essential amino acids, collagen, hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycan and chondroitin sulfate, polysaccharides, and a number of fatty acids. EVA is high in calcium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc.

The predominant amino acids in EVA are glycine, alanine, proline, and glutamic acid. Classes of lipid found in antlers include fatty acids, glycolipids, and phospholipids. Lysophosphatidylcholine with palmitic acid accounts for 50% of the total fatty acids extracted from antler velvet. Other than organic compounds, velvet antlers contain minerals such as Ca, P, Mg, Fe, K, and Na as major components and Ni, Cu, Ti, Mn, Sn, Si, and Ba as minor components.

EVA also contains unique peptides and growth factors that support hormonal health, skin renewal, and collagen production. It contains growth factors like IGF-1 and IGF-2 that appear to be the reason behind its strength and vitality promoting effects.

Combined with Mitolife Panacea (shilajit), this premium grade, freeze dried, USA-sourced EVA could be used in a protocol to help improve overall strength and stamina.

ARE THE ELK HARMED?

Antlers are the only appendages among mammals that regenerate every year. They are also among the only appendages where it is possible to harvest without harm or disfigurement to the animal.

The velvet on elk bulls that are 2-4 years old is cut when the antlers have grown to the stage between 4th and 5th tyne. This is when the developing antlers have reached the peak of their nutritional value, when the horns are still soft and covered with velvety fur. The animal is brought into a shed and into a chute that holds them in place. The antler is cut off and then treated with an ointment. There is 1 inch of antler remaining on the head. The animal experiences no pain during the process. They may feel a little warmth from the saw while cutting.  As soon as antler is removed they are released back into the pen they came from. They are eating and drinking water almost immediately. The antler grows back again the next year usually bigger and better.

The velvet is stripped from the antler and freeze dried to preserve its high nutrient content and then turn it into a pure, 100 percent velvet powder.
